Can’t face away from Facebook? It might be iDisorder

Ever heard of iDisorder? Chances are you know someone who has this very affliction. If you have children, they could easily suffer from iDisorder. And maybe you do too.

iDisorder is a term from a new book by Larry Rosen, a professor and past chair of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. The book—iDisorder: Understanding our Obsession with Technology—explores the consequences of society’s growing addiction to digital devices. Rosen will discuss iDisorders in an upcoming Digital Nibbles podcast.

Here’s the big point, in Rosen’s own terms, taken from the opening pages of his book: “The argument that I will make is that overreliance on gadgets and websites has created an enmeshed relationship with technology and that this relationship can cause significant problems in our psyche, what I call an iDisorder.”

Rosen’s book makes the case that in our use of technology devices we show symptoms of narcissism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, social phobia, hypochondria, and various other mental problems.

To be clear, Rosen isn’t building a case for abandonment of smart phones and other digital devices. Instead, he is offering insights into how we can live with and enjoy all our gadgets without compromising our mental health and our relationships with the people around us.

In the same podcast, you can also hear from Dennis Owen, a VP of marketing for Cathay Pacific Airlines. He’ll give you the inside story on his company’s Klout campaign, which has drawn widespread attention from bloggers who focus on marketing and social media.

The podcast goes live on Wednesday, August 8, at 3 p.m. Pacific. You can attend in real time via the “Listen Live” link on the Digital Nibbles home page.
